Spirit of Place

Like so many of the places we visit regularly, the hidden knowledge of the landscape

fades into the background of our lives. What was once a major topic of local

conversation might become shrouded in vines, monuments that bore significance

become caked in dirt, trees fall, roads are built… but these layers remain deeply

entrenched.

There is no better example of this than Woodcock Nature Center and its 152 acre

preserve. Like many places in New England, it was first inhabited by Indigenous

peoples. The influx of settlers quickly turned the area to farmland and, eventually, the

preserve as we know it was purchased by the state of Connecticut as part of a flood

prevention initiative in the 1950s and 60s. Many other secrets lie throughout the

Woodcock preserve, woven into the history and experiences of those who have come

before us. (Perhaps a subject of another blog!)

I recently read that architect and theorist Christian Norberg-Schulz popularized the idea

that each place has a palpable quality or character which gives atmosphere to the

natural and built environment. He drew this concept from what the ancient Romans

referred to as genius loci or “spirit of place”.

It is interesting to me that so many people who visit the Woodcock preserve and

experience its many trails, pools, ponds and open space immediately feel attached to it.

Perhaps they are experiencing this “spirit of place”. Because we hear it so often from

visitors, it’s something we have woven into the fabric of our mission through creative

and place-based programs that bring our community together.

It’s rare to find somewhere as beloved as Woodcock Nature Center where the “spirit of

place” over decades remains perceptible. What endures is a familiar atmosphere that

not only welcomes discovery but invites you to become a part of its history.
