Summer Camp FAQ's

July 10

We are proud that Woodcock Nature Center is uniquely positioned to provide outdoor experiences for our children during what will be an unprecedented summer. While camp looks alitle different, we are committed to serving our community through nature this summer.

Our dedicated staff has worked hard to adapt our camp programs and create high-level protocols that meet the guidelines laid out by the CDC, CT Office of Early Childhood and American Camp Association. While we know that there is no guarantee that our protocols will 100% eliminate the risk of COVID-19, we will continue to adjust to mitigate risks.

Will there be summer camp this season?

Yes, we are planning on summer camp but with the following adjustments:

1. Programs during the weeks of June 15 and June 22 are cancelled. Governor Lamont originally announced that licensed summer camps may open on June 29. He has since changed the camp open date to June 22, but Woodcock camp weeks of June 15 and 22 remain cancelled for staff training and planning for the remainder or the summer.

2. All Pre-K and entering Kindergarten through 2nd grade groups have also been cancelled (Nestlings, Fledglings and Scouts). We feel strongly that it will be a challenge for our staff to execute a quality program while our youngest campers while also meeting the health, safety and distancing requirements.

3. We will be adding two additional weeks of camp: June 29 and August 17. Registration coming soon.

4. We have cancelled all family campouts as well as the CIT program this summer.

5. Many procedures and programs will be different. Please read our What to Expect This Summer memo closely.

Please also read our May 5 and May 29 communication to camp families.

I am registered for the weeks of June 15 and June 22 which have been cancelled. What do I do now?

If you are currently registered for June 15 or June 22 weeks of camp, here is what we can offer:

  • A full refund to your credit card.

  • A combination of a refund and a tax-deductible donation to Woodcock Nature Center.

  • Or, please consider donating your full registration fee.

Please email us to indicate your preference above. To help us efficiently process your request please email us  rather than calling.

I have a Pre-K or K-2 camper registered for one or more weeks during July or August which have been cancelled. What do I do now?

If you are currently in this situation, here is what we can offer:

  • A full refund to your credit card

  • A combination of a refund and a tax-deductible donation to Woodcock Nature Center.

  • Or, please consider donating your full registration fee.

Please email us to indicate your preference. To help us efficiently process your request please email us rather than calling.

Will you be able to accommodate the currently registered 3-8 campers given the limit of 30 children at camp each week this summer?

Yes and no. Programs for campers entering grades 3-8 are planned to run as scheduled but in much smaller numbers (30 campers per week). Prior to the pandemic, our popular summer camp was 75% full with many groups at capacity. Unfortunately, new state guidelines mandate that we have no choice but to reduce the number of campers in some of our groups.

If we can no longer accommodate you in your originally registered week, you will be notified directly via email on or before June 5. These families will be offered an opportunity to switch into a less full week of camp or one of our newly added weeks of camp: June 29 and August 17. If a switch is not possible, you will be offered a full refund.

All registered families will receive a confirmation of their summer registrations before June 10. Please note that our online registration system may not be accurate or may be shut down while we sort through these changes.

Will I get a refund if further camp weeks are cancelled or if Woodcock has to cancel my child’s registration?

Yes. If Woodcock Nature Center cancels a camp week in advance to accommodate state guidance you will have an opportunity for a full refund. However, once camp is underway, if a camp week is cancelled due to concerns of staff or camper exposure to COVID-19, refunds will not be issued. There will be no refunds for camp days cancelled due to weather concerns.

Please visit our 2020 Camp Policies page for updates on refund and camp policies during the pandemic.

What adjustments will you make to ensure the safety of campers and staff?

We are committed to keeping our community, staff and campers safe. We continue to work through guidelines provided by the CDC and Office of Early Childhood Education, which administers our camp license. Please read our detailed What to Expect This Summer document.

I already know that I do not plan to send my 3rd-8th child to camp this summer. What should I do?

We understand that the decision to send your child to summer camp during this time is a difficult one. If you wish to have your registration refunded please email our office at wnc@woodcocknaturecenter.org

In fact, it is very helpful for our planning purposes to know as far in advance as possible if your child will not be joining us so, we appreciate you letting us know as soon as you have made your decision.

My child is considered higher risk for severe illness. Should I send them to camp?

The decision to send your child to camp is a personal one and we realize that decision has become even more difficult during this time. If your child is at higher risk for infection, we recommend that you consider not sending them to camp. Please review the CDC’s recommendations on people who need to take extra precautions during this time.
